The National Weather Service warns that heavy snow will be blowing into the Nassau County area late Friday and could leave us on Saturday morning with anywhere from 10, 15 or more than 20 inches of snow depending on the storm track.

Dubbed a “superstorm” by weather forecasters, Hurricane Sandy pummeled Bellmore-Merrick with floodwaters that reached three to six feet in many parts of south Bellmore and south Merrick and destroyed homes and cars, while also bringing hurricane-force wind gusts that toppled trees, tore the siding off houses, and ripped apart fences and decks.

In light of what the weather service called a "moderate" risk for severe thunderstorms that could contain heavy rain, damaging wind, lightning, hail and even a tornado, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced the postponement of the Outdoor Summer Movie Night at Eisenhower Park's Lakeside Theatre as well as the Summer Concert Under the Stars at Wantagh Park, both scheduled for tonight.

The record-breaking blizzards that blanketed everything with snow and freezing rains in the winter of 2010-11 may seem like distant memories, but, alas, it is that time of year again. And just as you winterize your homes and prepare for storms that may pass through in the coming months, the Town of Hempstead is readying itself and its supplies for what the Farmers' Almanac termed "clime and punishment," a season of unusually cold and stormy weather.

So there I was, standing amid a torrential rain in a foot of water, stuffing a hastily made sandbag –– which was actually full of dirt –– into the crevices of my back door when lightning flashed and thunder rumbled across the steel-gray sky. Get the (insert expletive) inside! I thought.
