UPDATE: Residents were startled at the sudden flash of lightning and clap of thunder shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday when round two of the today's storm announced itself, bringing with it sleet and wind. Residents woke up to more than a foot of snow.
the National Weather Service reports an average of 13.3 inches of snow fell on Long Island.
Public school in our area are closed. Nassau Community College announced a late start for 1 p.m.
Officials advise people to only travel in an emergency. Kennedy airport was closed Thursday morning, but will reopen later.

The National Weather Service has issued a storm watch for our area for late Tuesday through Wednesday afternoon.
Snow is predicted to be heavy at times, with accumulations of six to 12 inches. Locally higher amounts are possible. Winds gusts can hit 25 TO 35 MPH, and visibility will be under a quarter mile at times.
Travel will be hazardous from Tuesday night through the daytime Wednesday.

Updated 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 27. A fierce winter storm that rolled into Bellmore-Merrick around 9 a.m. on Sunday continued to pound the community through Monday morning, dumping 12 to 20 inches of snow on the ground and buffeting the area with winds from 15 to 50 miles per hour. Temperatures dipped into the teens.

I don’t know how they do it, but the prognosticators at the Farmers’ Almanac were right again this winter. Back in August, they predicted a winter of “numbing cold” and “record-breaking” snow.
