John Street School marked Veterans Day on Nov. 12 with a heartfelt celebration that blended music, reflection and gratitude. The event, titled “A Morning of Honor, A Lifetime of Gratitude,” brought local veterans and students together for two assemblies — one for grades K-2 and another for grades 3-6 — ensuring every child had the chance to take part in the tribute.
The gymnasium filled with anticipation as veterans entered to a steady drum cadence performed by band students onstage. Students and staff rose to their feet in a show of respect before a student group, led by music teacher Alexa Gottesman, delivered a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. The tone of the morning was set not only by the music but by Principal Thomas Riccobono, who encouraged students to think deeply about the meaning behind the observance.
“As we celebrate this important day, we also take time to reflect on the meaning of service, sacrifice and the importance of community,” Riccobono said. “Today, we are joined by veterans who have made their own contributions to our nation’s history. Let’s remember that their sacrifices have allowed us to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities we have today.”
Assistant Principal Jung Lee introduced each honored guest individually, inviting the audience to pause for a moment of silence for veterans who have passed. A moving performance of “Taps,” played by a band student alongside band teacher Larry Rizzo, underscored the solemnity of the tribute.
Students also played a central role in the program. Several stepped forward to read personal messages they had written, thanking veterans for their service and sharing what the day meant to them. The celebration concluded on an uplifting note as Gottesman gathered students for a spirited sing-along. Together, they honored each military branch with its traditional anthem before closing with “This Land Is Your Land,” filling the room with pride and unity.
