The results for the Roosevelt Union Free School District’s $151 million budget for the 2026-27 school year were finally announced on Thursday afternoon, nine days after the election was held on May 19. Roosevelt voters approved the budget and elected Veronica Walters and Emily Moore to serve as Board of Education trustees in contested races.

The school district budget passed by a vote of 257 to 48, according to the final canvassed results released by the district. The spending plan represents a decrease of $1.5 million compared the current year’s budget.

Voters also approved the district’s capital reserve proposition with a vote of 249 to 39.

Veronica Walters, a Roosevelt daycare provider, won her school board trustee race against Alfred Taylor, 147 to 125, with one write-in vote. Walters will take the seat of Belinda Monroe, the former school board president who did not seek re-election.

Emily Moore, an incumbent, was re-elected by Roosevelt voters over Frank Abel, 158 to 115. In addition to serving the Roosevelt school district, Moore has been an educator and a civil rights activist.

Walters and Moore will serve three year terms from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2029.

The school district told the Herald the night of the election that a “overwhelming amount of affidavit ballots” caused the delay in announcing the election results.

“The Roosevelt Union Free School District extends its sincere appreciation to all residents who participated in this year’s annual budget vote and Board of Education election,” the district said in a statement to the Herald. “The approval of the 2026-27 school district budget and the capital reserve proposition reflects the community’s continued investment in our students, schools, facilities and future. The district also congratulates Veronica L. Walters and Dr. Emily Moore on their election to the Board of Education and thanks all candidates for their willingness to serve the Roosevelt school community.”
