A Hempstead man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2024 shooting death of Maurice Sinclair Thomas during a late-night argument in a village parking lot.
Kane Moore, 32, admitted in front of Nassau County Judge Caryn Fink on Jan. 6 to fatally shooting Thomas during a dispute behind 134 Yale St. in the early morning hours of Sept. 21, 2024. Prosecutors said the two men were playing cards with friends in the rear parking lot when an argument broke out. Moore pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot Thomas once in the left side.
Thomas was taken to NYU Langone Long Island Hospital in Mineola, where he was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m.
Moore fled the scene, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office. He was arrested a month later, on Oct. 21, in Detroit by members of the Detroit Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. He was extradited back to Nassau County on Oct. 31.
District Attorney Anne Donnelly said Moore is expected to be sentenced to 25 years in prison at a hearing scheduled for March 16. Moore pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
“Kane Moore settled an argument with violence and ended Maurice Sinclair Thomas’ life,” Donnelly said in a statement on Jan. 7. “My office continues to crack down on illegal guns in our communities, to prevent more senseless tragedies like this one.”
