In mid-July, six participants in the Summer Youth Vocational Program at the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults spent a week in Long Beach with adaptive surf instructors from Skudin Surf, getting comfortable with boards on land before venturing into the Atlantic for hands-on lessons each day.

Since 2002, the Long Beach Department of Parks and Recreation has helped coordinate an annual memorial race honoring FDNY firefighter and former Long Beach lifeguard Michael Kiefer, for an intense multi-leg event: a 150-yard run to the shoreline, a 400-yard swim, a half-mile paddle on a surfboard and a 1½- mile run on the beach. This year's race was set up at Riverside Boulevard on July 26.

In 2022, Cassie Justice and her husband, Tom opened Sea City Vintage in Atlantic Beach to celebrate classic themes and retro styles in fashion, home goods, and artwork. By 2024, they expanded with a pop-up event at Bright Eye Beer Co. On July 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the market returned with more than 50 vendors for its second year at Kennedy Plaza.

More than 100 family members, friends, artists and community leaders gathered at Long Beach City Hall on July 22 to celebrate the life of internationally recognized artist and Holocaust survivor Hedy Pagremanski, known personally and professionally as Hedy Page, who died in February.

Ed Eaton served as Long Beach City Manager for nearly 25 years in three separate terms, from 1980 to 1999, briefly in 2001, and once more from 2006 until he retired in 2008. Eaton died on July 16 at age 83, after a long illness.
