Residents were told to stay in their homes and holiday rush-hour traffic was redirected away from a four-block area around Davison Court in East Rockaway at 4 p.m. last Friday by a Nassau County Bureau of Special Operations unit along with dozens of police officers.

Changing the venue for the East Rockaway 9/11 Memorial Service due to rain seemed like a small inconvenience last Friday evening, when almost 200 people filled Village Hall to honor, remember and pray for the victims of the tragedy that touched and, in some way, changed all of the survivors’ lives eight years ago at the World Trade Center.

A driver lost control of her 2008 Ford Explorer just after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, hitting two parked cars, crashing through a fence and knocking down two utility poles before coming to rest sideways on the Long Island Rail Road tracks just west of the Centre Avenue train station.

On a stiflingly hot and and sweltry afternoon last week, East Rockaway firefighters battled a mid-afternoon blaze on Second Avenue in East Rockaway. The fire was extinguished, a dog was rescued, and two firefighters were treated on the scene for heat exhaustion.

More than 500 homes have been added to the higher-risk flood zones in East Rockaway, which will have residents scrambling to purchase insurance — at a steep cost if they don’t do it before Sept. 11. This nearly doubles the number of village residences that are deemed to be in danger of flooding.
