Economists tell us that the Great Recession of recent years is over. The economy is growing again, albeit ever so slowly. Long Island’s jobless rate has dropped to below 7 percent. Housing prices in a number of area neighborhoods are starting — mind you, starting — to creep up. And we hear anecdotal evidence that people are beginning to spend again.

In recent months, critics of the Obama administration have lambasted the president’s $787 billion stimulus plan, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, passed in February. Sure, they say, the stock market is soaring and the real-estate market is steadily climbing. But America is still shedding jobs. Ergo, the stimulus must have failed.

George Maragos, CEO of a financial services business, is challenging two-term incumbent Howard Weitzman in the race for Nassau County comptroller. Maragos said that the county’s finances have been poorly managed for the past eight years, and he believes his experience can bring needed change.
