The Lynbrook Fire Department brought car enthusiasts together at Greis Park on Oct. 4 for its annual Wounded Warrior fundraiser, continuing a 15-year tradition of supporting injured service members.
This year's fundraiser was a Wounded Warriors Car Show, featuring roughly 40 vehicles whose owners gathered to show their support despite less-than-ideal weather.
The event was originally scheduled for Sept. 20, but was postponed because of inclement weather. The weather conditions were still less than ideal, but, Ex-Chief Kevin Bien, chairman of the Fire Department’s Wounded Warrior fundraising committee, said, “It was still really nice, and the car owners that were there were very happy to support the Wounded Warriors and show their appreciation for the servicemen.”
Participants competed for six trophies, along with a Best in Show award, while helping raise money for Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior.
The Fire Department received a $500 donation from Lynbrook American Legion Post 335, presented by Post Commander Anthony Samuel, in support of the event and the county program.
According to department spokesman Steve Grogan, who also serves as vice chairman of Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, the nonprofit was established in 2004, during the Iraq War. The organization supports wounded service members, including those receiving treatment and rehabilitation at military facilities along the East Coast.
For the past 15 years, Lynbrook firefighters have organized annual fundraisers benefiting the organization, raising a total of roughly $350,000, according to Bien.
The department's fundraising efforts extend beyond the car show. Proceeds from the event will be combined with money raised at the village's Oktoberfest celebration and an upcoming bingo night, scheduled for Nov. 10.
