While a handful of Nassau County football teams remain unbeaten, including East Meadow and Freeport in Conference I, and surprising West Hempstead in Conference IV, most are either fighting for playoff positioning or fighting for their playoff lives.

At a time when school taxes are high, the state is cutting school aid and everyone is trying to reduce spending, two Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District trustees have proposed placing a $3.5 million to $4.5 million bond on the May ballot to fund construction of three synthetic-turf football fields.
