Two years ago, when he was 11, Cory Nichols saw a documentary on poverty called “Hard Times: Lost on Long Island.” Cory, who has been acting on television and in movies since he was 6, was in the audience at the Long Island International Film Expo, where a film in which he co-starred was screening as well. But it was “Hard Times” that made the biggest impression on Cory, who is now a ninth-grader at Oceanside High School. “It made me really want to help our community,” he said. “People don’t have to say they’re in need to be in need.” So he decided to take action. more

Tom Cutinella, a football player in Shoreham-Wading River High School, died after a game last week. Cutinella, 16, had blocked a player from John H. Glenn High School during an Oct. 1 game. He collided with the opposing player and collapsed soon afterward. Cutinella died at Huntington Hospital a few hours later. more
When Courtney Pincus was a student at Oceanside High School, she always said she would start a performing arts school called To The Stage. The name comes from a lyric in the song “La Vie Boheme” from the musical “Rent.” “I was in love with ‘Rent’,” Pincus said. In 2012, she made that dream come true. more
