A special election to replace Nassau County Legislator Peter Schmitt will be held on Election Day, Nov. 6. Schmitt, the Legislature’s majority leader and presiding officer, who represented the 12th District since 1995, died suddenly of a heart attack on Oct. 3. He was 62.

In a 3-2 decision last Thursday, New York State Appellate Division judges upheld new boundaries drawn by Nassau Republican lawmakers for the county’s 19 legislative districts. If the state Court of Appeals rules in favor of the Republican plan on Aug. 24, the GOP’s legislative map will reshape a number of districts, including those covering the Five Towns, Elmont, Baldwin and Merrick-Bellmore.

North Bellmore environmental activist Richard Schary was hurrying through the woods behind the Brookside School in North Merrick on Monday morning, dashing from tree to tree in search of graffiti.
