A bus with children inside hit the awning at the Oceanside Jewish Center’s entrance on April 28 at 4:14 p.m. Although the impact shattered the glass of the bus windows, the children, who were in second through sixth grade, and bus driver were not hurt.

According to OJC religious school director Janet Jeddah, the bus was bringing the children from an afterschool program at the Friedberg JCC to religious school at OJC. The Friedberg JCC owns the bus.

The Oceanside Fire Department brought a ladder truck and two ambulances to the scene, while the Nassau County Police brought four ambulances. The fire department and the police checked the children for injuries. Finding none, they called their parents to pick them up, leaving after about an hour and a half.

The children were small enough that the glass shattered above their heads, which left them uninjured, according to Oceanside Fire Department spokesman Ed Scharfberg.

The fire department also cleared all of the debris from the entrance. Jeddah said the driveway is safe, but an engineer needs to look at the structure of the building.
