The Village of Island Park celebrated a milestone Memorial Day on May 23, marking the 100th anniversary of its annual Memorial Day Parade while honoring the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

Hosted by Mayor Michael McGinty and the Village Board of Trustees, this year’s parade carried added significance as it coincided with both the village’s centennial year and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

Leading the procession as grand marshal was former Mayor James W. Ruzicka Sr., whose longstanding service to the community made him a fitting choice for the occasion. A Navy veteran and former chief of the Island Park Fire Department, Ruzicka guided marchers along the parade route with the same dedication and leadership that characterized his years in public service.

Despite overcast skies and intermittent showers, residents gathered throughout the village to participate in one of Island Park’s most cherished traditions. Community leaders emphasized that Memorial Day remains a solemn observance dedicated to honoring those who lost their lives while serving in the military.

Among the elected officials in attendance were Town of Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti, Councilwoman Laura Ryder, Town Clerk Kate Murray, Nassau County Legislator Patrick Mullaney and former Congressman Anthony D’Esposito.

The parade featured participation from numerous local organizations and community groups, including American Legion Post 1029 and its Ladies Auxiliary, the Island Park Fire Department, the MTA Police Department Ceremonial Unit, Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums, Lincoln Orens Middle School and its band, Francis X. Hegarty School, the Island Park Library, Island Park Little League, local scouting organizations and the Long Beach–Island Park Lions Club.

Residents lined the parade route, with seating graciously provided by Sacred Heart Church, allowing community members of all ages to take part in the observance.

The procession concluded at the Memorial Monument on Long Beach Road, where a ceremony paid tribute to the nation’s fallen service members. Veterans Coordinator Robert Wilson led the program, while prayers were offered by Msgr. John Tutone of Sacred Heart Church and Rev. Joel Hernandez of Full Gospel Church. A vintage New York City Police Department cruiser served as the parade escort.

Village officials also expressed gratitude to the Nassau County Police Department, Island Park Fire Department, Island Park Department of Public Works and the Memorial Day Parade Committee for organizing the event.

“Days like this remind us what matters most: our country, community, and the obligation to forever remember those who gave their lives defending the freedoms we enjoy as Americans,” McGinty said.
