Oceanside and Island Park dig out

Area quickly recovers from moderate storm

Although predictions up to Tuesday night called for upwards of 18 inches of snow for parts of Long Island, the storm that actually hit wasn’t nearly as bad.

Oceanside and Island Park got hit with about 10 inches of snow. And by the time most people started to clean off their sidewalks and cars, the sun was already shining down.

“It wasn’t anything like the other storm,” said Island Park Mayor Jim Ruzicka. “Our guys got in around 3 a.m. The streets were ready to go by the time people were waking up.”

Ruzicka said that over the next day, village workers would be cleaning off the bus stops and sidewalks on village property, making sure things are accessible for residents.

Oceanside was also rather quickly cleaned. Streets were driveable on Wednesday, leaving only sidewalks to be shoveled by residents.

Ruzicka wants to make sure that pedestrians in Island Park are safe, but it’s a sentiment that applies everywhere.

“The only other thing that we’re going to be insisting on is that residents get out there and clean their sidewalks so people don’t have to walk in the street,” he said.
