Oceanside building strong foundation

Oceanside girls volleyball is again in a place where it can handle any rival in Nassau Class AAA, giving the Sailors an abundantly clear goal.

Coach Robert Kiley-Rendon acknowledged the next two years could prove immensely successful, but none of the girls are looking too far ahead just yet.

“We would be very happy if we had back-to-back county championships, and I think we definitely have the talent to do it,” Kiley-Rendon said. “But it's just about climbing the mountain now and staying mentally sharp, keeping that drive in practice and out of practice to do well. We have some tough competition ahead of us, and I think that we’re going to put up a good fight at minimum.”

With a core group of three seniors and much larger cast of talented juniors, Oceanside currently holds a 1-1 non-league record in a leisurely start to its 2026 campaign. Following a tough five-set loss to Mepham, the Nassau Class AA runner-up last year, on Sept. 1, the Sailors easily handled Baldwin in three straight sets on Sept. 15.

Kiley-Rendon gave seniors Callie La Personerie, Alexis Sciglibaglio, and Anastasia Frangiadakis the credit for taking charge. The tight-knit trio leads Oceanside from different parts of the floor and have already started producing.

La Personerie, the three-year starting libero, was one of Nassau County’s leaders in digs as a junior and continues to lead a stout Oceanside defense. She has 29 digs through two games.

Frangiadakis, a strong middle hitter with 18 kills through two games, is a centerpiece on the floor, providing a blocking presence as well as an obvious scoring threat. She is joined by Sciglibaglio, another middle hitter who relies on creativity over power to create chances.

“I have high hopes for the three of them, as our senior leadership, to lead us to where we need to be,” Kiley-Rendon said. “Those are our only three seniors, so a lot of our success has really been carried by our underclassmen.”

Several younger players on the outside have already begun racking up stats early in the campaign. Through two games, junior Avery Quinones has 20 kills, 16 digs and 12 aces.

On the right-side attack, junior Mikayla Zack played a massive role in Oceanside’s game effort against Mepham, earning nine kills with 10 digs and two aces. Junior Ella Ferrovecchio, a versatile player, also had a huge part in that game, earning 10 digs alongside La Personerie.

Oceanside’s stellar cast of juniors also includes Lily Conte and Sam Madden. In the Sailors’ dominant victory of Baldwin, the two defensive-minded players made a combined 39 assists and are likely to earn their way into the starting lineup.

“They’re very similar in play style, both very defensively strong,” Kiley-Rendon said. “Our plan at some point is to have them both in the starting lineup in a 6-2 formation.”

Alexis Borresen, one of two sophomores on the roster, also made an immediate impression against Baldwin, matching Frangiadakis’ 11 kills and displaying “lights-out” offensive ability early on.

It’s tempting to consider what Oceanside can do in 2027, but the Sailors are built to win now as well, and Kiley-Rendon won’t have to keep them to task with championship aspirations directly ahead.
