Oceanside’s boys soccer team kicks off the playoffs this week seeking the program’s first county title following an unbeaten regular season.
The Sailors headed into the postseason on a winning note with a 2-0 home victory against Westbury on Oct.13 to earn the one seed in Conference AAA with a 12-0-3 record.
“It has been a matter of the buys buying in and understanding that every opponent is different so when we prep they have to understand how to mix our style of game against formidable opponents like the ones we face in our conference,” Oceanside coach Patrick Turk said. “Our conference is an absolute war zone in the best way as we have so many good teams and any team can win any given day.”
The Westbury win that clinched a conference regular-season crown featured two goals from senior forward Jackson Langevin, who has been an offensive sparkplug all season with 15 goals and 12 assists.
Junior central midfielder Brady Castoro was also an integral part of the regular season as the team’s second leading scorer with five goals and three assists. The offense has also gotten contributions near the net from junior Dylan Langevin, younger brother of Dylan, freshman Richie Visone and sophomore Aidan St. Paul.
Turk said having multiple potential goal scorers has been crucial with keeping defenses on their toes.
Junior Matt Keegan and senior Sean Brosokas have also been key to setting up offensive chances from the midfield along with Castoro on counter attacks.
The defense anchored by center backs Conor Schmid and Mike Molite recorded eight clean sheets in the regular season. Seniors Victor Candia and Kieran Harrington have also keyed a backline that is second in Conference AAA in goals allowed.
“We play some very dynamic offensive players that are real threats and they're able to meet the challenge and take care of it,” said Turk of his defense, which held opponents to a goal or less in 12 of 15 regular season matches.
The defense has also gotten strong play from senior goalkeeper Collin Schirrmaccher, who has recorded eight shutouts while facing explosive offensive teams. He helped preserve Oceanside’s unbeaten season with a nine-save performance in a 2-2 draw against Hempstead on Oct. 6,
Oceanside begins its quest for championship this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. when it hosts eighth-seeded Massapequa in the Class AA quarterfinals. A win would advance the Sailors to the county semifinals Sunday at Farmingdale State against the winner of Syosset-Hempstead.
Turk said all potential playoff opponents will present stiff tests and that the team’s rigorous league schedule should prepare the players well for high-stakes postseason matches.
“It puts the boys in the right mindset,” Turk said of the schedule. "You're trying to build a certain brand and style of soccer for the season and you're trying to make sure that that can withstand any tests that's thrown at us.”
