Oceanside students participate in a day of service

School Five’s sixth graders spent a day giving back to their school and community. This year’s day of service began with an introduction to the story of Welles Crowther, a 9/11 hero who saved as many as 18 people and is remembered for the red bandana he carried in memory of his father. The students received red bandanas that they wore for the day while they planted flowers, placed flags around school grounds to mark Veterans Day, wrapped gifts for donations to needy children, and chalked positive messages on the playground around the school. Later the sixth graders met with high school officers from the Sources of Strength program who taught them about coping and being resilient during times of adversity.
