Workshop: Social Networking for Work and Business

Audrey Rogers of The Women’s Financial Group will demonstrate how to create dynamic profiles using Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. Registration is required.


Jewish Songwriters
Through stories and song, vocalist Merilee Kaufman will highlight the musical contributions made by Jewish-American composers and lyricists, including Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Richard Rogers and George Gershwin, at 2 p.m. on Jan. 27. Tickets, which are limited to two per person, will be available to residents in the Oceanside School District on Jan. 17. Tickets will be available to non-residents Jan. 20.


Songs That Won An Oscar
Vocalist Bettina Paley walks the red carpet performing a lively repertoire of unforgettable classics from such films as “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “You Light Up My Life,” and “The Way We Were.” Tickets, which are limited to two per person, will be available beginning Feb. 14 to Oceanside School District residents and Wednesday, Feb. 17 to non-residents, if available. The event begins at 2 p.m. on Feb. 21.


“Rome Around Italy”
Photographer and Oceanside resident Dr. Jeffrey Herzlich debuts his panoramic photography exhibit at the Oceanside Library now through February 2010. In this exhibit, Herzlich details the flow of life through Rome, Italy, using oversized panoramas highlighting the extensive structure, form, and beauty of ancient Italian piazzas, with modern-day people, ranging from citizens to tourists, all passing casually through them.

AARP Driver Safety Class
The fee for this class, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Jan. 23, is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. ID cards are to be presented to the instructor. Each person must provide a separate check or money order payable to AARP. Island Park residents will be given first preference. All others will be placed on a waiting list. Register at the circulation desk.


W. Eugene Smith’s Neighborhood Revisited
The Island Park Library will host a free lecture about “LIFE” magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith at 7 p.m. on Jan. 25. Island Park photographer Joseph Abate will give a photography presentation of Smith’s old loft neighborhood in New York City. Register for the event at the library’s circulation desk.


Valentine Topiary
Jule Gaudioso will help you create a romantic Valentine Topiary to adorn your mantle or tabletop. Starting with a foam topiary form, you will add flowers, leaves and different colored French-wired ribbons. Follow the design of the sample or create your own style. Material fee of $18 must be paid at the time of registration. The event, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, is limited to 15 people. Each participant must bring a wire cutter. Author Visit: Meet authors Terry and Brittany McLeod
Written by mother-daughter team Terry and Brittany McLeod, “113 Things to do by 13” covers all of the issues facing today’s tweens. The book is packed with lots of girl power and tips, advice and contributions from young celebrities on making it through their tweens. The first ten girls to sign up will receive a complimentary copy of the book when they arrive for the program, from 2 - 3:30 p.m., on Feb. 6. The event is for girls ages 9 - 12 and moms. BeTween Us Book Club
Led by Ms. Meghan, the group will discuss Gennifer Choldenko’s “Al Capone Does My Shirts” from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 8. There will be games, snacks, music and more. Register at the circulation desk and pick up a copy of the book.

Oceanside Little League Baseball Registration
Parents are invited to register children ages 5-16 are invited to register for the Oceanside Little League Baseball team Jan. 21-23 at East Coast Sport, 3580 Oceanside Road. Registration is from 7-9 p.m. Jan 21 and Jan. 22, and 9 a.m. - noon Jan. 23. For more information, call Little League Commissioner Mike Levitan at 678-4312.


Fourth Annual Game Night
The Island Park Jewish Center, 191 Long Beach Road, is hosting its Fourth Annual Game Night, playing the game Facts in Five, on Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Game night includes raffles, a silent auction, and food. Tickets are $25 if purchased by Jan. 15 and $35 after that or at the door. Proceeds go to the Hole in the Wall Gang and the Jewish Center. The Hole in the Wall Gang, founded by Paul Newman in 1988, is a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses. Love Your Troops
The Island Park Civic Association is hosting an evening to Love Your Troops at Bridgeview Yacht Club, 80 Waterfront Boulevard, from 7-11 p.m. on Feb. 6. IPCA is teaming up with Soldiers’ Angels to collect donations and supplies for soldiers overseas. The evening will include Hors d’oeuvres, a three-course surf and turf sit-down dinner, a DJ, dancing, door prizes and raffles. Tickets are $65 per person. Bereavement Support Groups
COPE, a grief and healing organization dedicated to supporting parents and families living with the loss of a child, holds free monthly support group meetings on the first Wednesday of every month for parents on the South Shore at the Oceanside Jewish Center, 2860 Brower Avenue, from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Feb. 3. Men’s Club Annual Superbowl Party
The Oceanside Jewish Center, 2860 Brower Avenue, will host the Men’s Club Annual Superbowl Party beginning at 5 p.m. on Feb. 7. Ticket are $25 for adults and $12.50 for children 13 and under. Price includes tailgate dinner, snacks, desserts, soft drinks and coffee. For reservations, call 536-6112.

Hollywood’s Peter Pan: The Cinema of Steven Spielberg
Throughout his life, Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg has had a cinematic vision, and a passion to tell a great story in films like “Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Color Purple,” “Jurassic Park,” “Schindler’s List,” and many others. Healthy Eating Habits Start Early
It is much easier to establish good nutritional choices when children are young than to try to break bad habits later on. The featured speaker is a nutritionist who specializes in children who are fussy or picky eaters. She will offer information about how to eat right and be fit for life.
