Paint by sunset brings beachfront sip 'n paint experience to Masone Beach

As the sun dipped below the horizon at Masone Beach, participants traded beach towels for paintbrushes during a relaxed evening of creativity led by artist and certified art teacher Frank Caprino.

The Paint by Sunset sip ‘n paint event on July 22 invited attendees to create their own beach-inspired paintings while enjoying music and their favorite beverages. Guided step by step by Caprino, participants transformed blank canvases into finished works of art — regardless of their artistic experience.

The classes are part of Caprino's Sip N Paint with Frank business, which he launched about 12 years ago after being inspired by the popular Paint Nite events and television painter Bob Ross.

"I thought maybe I could do it in people's homes," Caprino said. "I guide them step by step from blank canvas to masterpiece."

What began as a side business has since expanded to include restaurant events, fundraisers, children's parties and programs for people with special needs. Caprino has also partnered with Masone Beach and the Island Park Public Library to host community painting events over the years.

Although only nine people attended this year's beach class — fewer than previous events that sold out — Caprino said the intimate group made for an enjoyable evening.

"I was surprised only nine came out this time, but it is what it is," he said. "Those that did show seemed to have had a great time."

More than teaching painting techniques, Caprino hopes participants leave feeling relaxed and accomplished. He believes creating art offers a welcome escape from everyday stress.

"I think creating art is absolutely therapeutic," he said. "You get lost in the process, stop thinking about the stresses of daily life for a little while and unwind."

Caprino said many first-time painters arrive convinced they have little artistic ability, but he works to put them at ease.

"They say, 'I can't even draw a stick figure,'" he said with a laugh. "I tell them, 'That's OK, because we're not making stick figures. Don't worry — no one fails my class.'"

For Caprino, the greatest reward comes at the end of each session.

"A 'thank you, I had a great time' is the best compliment," he said.
