Oceanside Middle School (OMS) celebrated its recognition as a “School to Watch” by New York State’s Department of Education on May 14.

“It’s a huge honor, and we’re very proud of this recognition,” said OMS principal Dr. Allison Glickman-Rogers. “We thank the entire school community…We’re very proud in Oceanside to provide our adolescent learners with the optimal learning environment during these critical years.”

The celebration was attended by Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky, Oceanside schools administration, and of course the students.

Glickman-Rogers noted that 28 middle schools — out of over 1000 in the state — have received this designation. OMS was first designated as a “School to Watch” in 2012. Schools are re-designated every three years if they continue to meet criteria.

OMS was recognized for such innovations as flexible block scheduling that allows teachers to collaborate together and change the schedule for more in-depth instruction on some topics. Some classrooms in the newer section of the building even have movable walls to allow teachers to team up and bring their classes together.

The school also uses a teaming approach so that every student is matched with anadult who knows their strengths and challenges and can guide their academic and interpersonal growth.

The “Schools to Watch” designation is awarded under the authority of the New York State Education Department, the New York State Middle School Association, and the Essential Elements Schools to Watch Leadership Forum.
