The Theatre Guild of Oceanside returned to the stage with its annual production, presenting the Golden Age musical “Carnival!” on Dec. 6 and 7 at Oceanside School No. 6. The guild — founded in 1968 and revived four years ago after a 25-year hiatus — continued its growing momentum with a vibrant, emotionally driven staging led by director Bruce Bider.
Bider, who has deep roots in the guild’s history, said this year’s show drew a blend of returning performers and newcomers, reinforcing the group’s rebuilding efforts. Cast members Ed Tupper, Jeffrey Gedacht and Mitchell Kessler said the lesser-known musical challenged them creatively and offered audiences a rare chance to experience a Broadway gem seldom produced today.
The production also featured a special appearance from Broadway veteran Anita Gillette, who starred as Lili Daurier in the original 1961 run, followed by an onstage conversation hosted by theater historian Richard Skipper.
Additional cast members included Ryan McNeely, Joseph Massimillo and Jess Abbotts.
For many involved, the show was both a creative challenge and a celebration of community theater’s resurgence. As Kessler put it, building the production together was “a labor of love” — and a reminder of the talent thriving in Oceanside.
