Winter storm blankets Oceanside in snow

Oceanside and Island Park residents shoveled out of their first snowstorm of the season last weekend. More than a foot of snow fell in the area, and heavy winds produced even higher snow drifts. Snow began falling last Saturday and picked up to blizzard conditions by night-fall. Snow continued falling throughout the night and well into Sunday morning.

While residents were left with a blanket of snow to dig their way out, many still had time to enjoy the winter wonderland. Kids of all ages donned their winter wear and headed out to play over the weekend. Island Park and Oceanside schools opened at their normal time on Monday morning.

Ray Ribiero, commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Public Works, said cleanup crews would continue working over the next few days to keep the roads clear and free of ice. County plows and sanders hit the roads on Saturday and continued clearing and sanding the roadways for the Monday morning commute. Ribiero urged motorists to remain extra careful in the days following the storm, especially of black ice.
