For Nassau County, 2024 is a year of new beginnings — a fact that is evidenced by the ascension of two new legislative caucus leaders and five new legislators. I was looking forward to a fresh start and greater bipartisan cooperation as we confront the county’s most important issues.

Forget scary movies or the end of the world — what scares almost all of us the most, by far, is getting a voicemail from a family member, telling you to call back right away because “it’s important.”
My 90-year-old father did that last week, a message I got on my phone as I was walking from what had been an enlightening and productive meeting with a school superintendent. The last several months had been filled with difficult calls like this. My mother’s cancer. My stepmother’s passing. Learning that a former colleague is gravely ill.

Having served in the Assembly for 23 years, I can’t avoid comparing the Legislature of my days and the current one. So much has changed, a lot of it for the good. There are now such things as electronic voting, immediate access to pending legislation, a modern sound system and many other changes that make legislating so much faster, easier and smarter.
