Now, suddenly, it’s almost summer. This morning I woke up to the song of birds in the backyard and the buzzing of carpenter bees dive-bombing the wooden decks and railings.

I am nothing if not trendy. On Oct. 7, I underwent surgery for breast cancer following a diagnosis two weeks earlier. It is, after all, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I wouldn’t think of having cancer any other time of the year.

In 1992, at the end of my second term in the Senate, I was approached by several courageous women from Long Island. They sat me down in my Senate conference room and brought to my attention that Long Island was producing higher-than-average rates of breast cancer.
