With Feb. 14 drawing near and marking the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. that left 17 dead, the nation’s legislators, students, parents and activists continue to fight for stricter gun policies. In New York, proposed gun reform laws could be passed in Albany as soon as this week, according to State Sen. Todd Kaminsky.

Sixteen-year-old Taylor Yon found comfort in Pine Trails Park, virtually in the center of Parkland, Fla. There, she and her friends wandered its sidewalks, past its familiar playgrounds, ball fields and band shell, and lit candles for the dead.
Afterward, they sat on towels on the ground and talked for hours, struggling to put into words, to understand, the massacre perpetrated by a one-time student of their school, whom the Herald is not identifying.

Only days after escaping the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history, Robert Gaafar took a walk with his wife and two young children. He heard popping noises, momentarily transporting him from Rockville Centre back to the Route 91 Harvest Festival last Oct. 1, at which 58 people were killed and 851 injured.
