West Hempstead comes off a season which saw just three victories, and ended with a 2-1 overtime loss to Sewanhaka in a Nassau Class A boys’ soccer play-in game. With 11 seniors on the roster, the Rams should be stronger in 2014, and could be in the mix for a playoff berth.

It was a banner year on the baseball diamond for West Hempstead. The Rams compiled an overall record of 15-4, and finished atop the Nassau County Wide Conference with 14-2 league record.

When West Hempstead softball coach Chris Van Kovics got a look at his team’s 2014 schedule, he figured a .500 season would be respectable. The Rams had but four seniors, a new catcher, and a couple of pitchers who generally don’t people away.

An unknown heading into the spring, Clarke’s pitching staff has rapidly developed into an area of strength. The Rams completed a three-game sweep of Seaford with an 8-1 victory on April 24, thanks to a complete-game effort from senior Mike Turton who struck out six and didn’t walk any Vikings.

Playing for the first time in more than two weeks and only for the fifth time this season, Clarke brought plenty of intensity and showed little signs of rust in beating neighboring rival East Meadow, 8-7, on Diana Schmitt’s goal with 5:16 remaining in a Nassau Conference III girls’ lacrosse game on April 24.

Clarke has its ace in the circle, sophomore pitcher Sarah Cornell, and there’s always a good chance the Lady Rams’ opponents are going to come up empty at the plate. Cornell has three career no-hitters under her belt, including a 2-0 victory over South Side on April 12 that included 15 strikeouts.
