For nearly 10 years, the Herald has exposed the dire condition into which the woodlands surrounding the Meadowbrook Parkway have fallen. Vandals regularly spray graffiti on trees. Contractors dump their waste there.

Two revelations of large-scale animal neglect earlier this month in Rockville Centre were shocking. While it was hard to believe that human beings could allow animals in their care to suffer the utmost cruelty and squalor, it was almost impossible to understand why neighbors were unaware that dozens of dogs and cats were starving to death mere yards away.

Earlier this month, Isabella Grasso, a 17-year-old senior at Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, was killed when her car crossed a double yellow line and collided with another vehicle, also driven by a teenager.
