Schools must remain closed and learning must continue to take place online, at least through April 15, according to a new executive order issued by Governor Cuomo Friday to protect students and teachers against the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The order extends an earlier one that had closed schools through March 30.

As of Friday, nearly 45,000 New Yorkers were infected with the coronavirus, and almost 6,500 of them were hospitalized.

Cuomo described the pandemic as historic, saying it is testing the nation and will forge character.
