Traffic was thankfully light on Wednesday morning when a water main broke near Ocean Avenue and Merrick Road in Lynbrook. At about 8:30 a.m., Long Island American Water saw a pressure drop in area. They sent a crew to the intersection of Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue and found a leak in a 20-inch main, located under the street. Only three people lost service, and they were given temporary service . It took about an hour to repair, "The inclement weather hindered us a bit, but our crews have experience doing this," Varley said. America Water had one large crew there. Varley said that they will come back at a later date and replace that section of the main. He could only speculate why it leaked, "Until a further investigation is done, it would only be speculation." The crews were out there from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. rerouting traffic away from the area. It's a temporary restoration, Varley said, and they will come back to replace the entire section within upcoming weeks. more
