The power of light — a Hanukkah message

Temple hosts outreach service in Lynbrook

It was a lesson in love from Rabbi Victor Appell, who visited Temple Am Echad in Lynbrook on March 4. Appell, the Union for Reform Judaism congregational specialist for marketing, outreach and new communities, spoke to more than 50 people about the most important issues facing gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers and how religious institutions can help win the fight against bigotry. more

A cantor with a theatrical flair

This summer the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre welcomed a new cantor, David B. Sislen, who has settled into the new congregation and community with ease. Originally from Washington D.C., Sislen worked for more than 15 years as a theatrical lighting designer in multiple theaters along the east coast. more

One striking tradition that is widely observed by Jews at their Passover Seders involves the afikomen, a piece of matzah broken off near the beginning of the evening and eaten by participants “for dessert” after the meal. more

Lynbrook's Temple Am Echad holds women's Seder

Temple Am-Echad in Lynbrook held an unusual women’s Seder on March 9. The event was a joint effort of three congregations, Temple Am-Echad, Central Synagogue of Nassau County in Rockville Centre and Temple Beth Emmet of Hewlett. Women with no synagogue affiliation also attended. They ranged in age from the very young to 95-year-old Miriam Fine of Lynbrook, who has been a member of Am-Echad — the former Temple Emanu-el — for 75 years. Her parents were also members of the congregation. more
