Working with the Lynbrook PTA, Lynbrook resident Shari Cohen makes a positive difference in the lives of children in Hewlett Harbor. As the mother of two, her involvement in the PTA has always been out of concern for the needs of all children. It is for these reasons, among others, that Cohen was selected as one of thirteen residents to be honored with the Town of Hempstead’s Make a Difference award, presented on November 10.

“Tonight we pay homage to men and women who have touched the lives of so many in our township, said Supervisor Kate Murray in a speech made at the ceremony. “These individuals have never looked for recognition or rewards for their hard work and dedication,” she said. “They simply enjoy the satisfaction that comes from helping others. Tonight we honor them and offer our thanks for all that they have done to improve the lives of others and to make our communities better places in which to live.”

Cohen first became involved in 1996, working on committees at the Lynbrook Kindergarten Center. In the Waverly Park School, she became Delegate to the PTA Council, Treasurer, curriculum representative and ran the first Waverly Park Fashion Show. At the Middle School, Shari chaired many events including the annual book fair and spring barbecue. There, she became 1st vice president of the PTA Council. From 2006 to 2007, Cohen served as co-president of the Lynbrook High School PTA and chaired the committee to update the by-laws of the organization. From 2008 to 2009, she served as co-president of the Lynbrook PTA Council. Shari advocated on many districtwide issues ranging from the study of curriculum, athletic policies, facilities, Special Education, health and safety and support of the district’s budget.
