Waverly Park elects a new student council

Posted

Students at Lynbrook’s Waverly Park School received a first-hand lesson in the workings of the democratic process when they participated in Student Council elections, which were timed to coincide with the general elections.

Borrowing from real politics, the candidates for student council president, vice president, treasurer and secretary presented individual speeches to the student body, outlining their qualifications and major campaign promises — which included ideas for expanding community service, environmental action, and making everyone’s voice heard.

Much to everyone’s delight, an animated likeness of President Obama appeared on screen to introduce the candidates, explain the role of each office in the student government, and remind everyone about the importance of voting. The elections, which followed directly after the campaign speeches, were open to the entire student body. Students cast their votes through “Moodle,” the district’s online course management system.

After all the votes were tallied, Spencer Kaminsky was elected president, Dustin Mandell was elected vice president, Baily Mandell was named Treasurer and Jake Gus was named secretary.
