The Oceanside School District begins the new school year with a new theme, changes in programs and new leadership. The theme “Anchored Together with Purpose, Passion and People” reflects the work teachers and administrators have put in to enhance and improve the entire teaching and learning experience.
Among those enhancements; the expansion of the Project Extra in the Classroom initiative to encompass the fifth grade, with the focus on STEM, building rollercoaster models and studying climate cues to find “mystery classrooms” around the globe. Other plans include continuing to implement the Big History program within the 9th grade Integrated Program which melds English and Social Studies. In addition, the district will be providing a bilingual program for Kindergarten and establishing bilingual environments at all levels in accordance with new New York State regulations.
Suzanne Dwyer is the new Director of Technology K-12. For the past 19 years this Oceanside schools alumna has been integrating technology into the classroom. Previously she was the library media specialist at Oceanside High School, where she assisted students and teachers with all facets of technology. As a member of the district Technology Team, she was instrumental in creating what is now called “the digital environment” for the iPad initiative and served as staff developer and teacher coach at the Oceanside Middle School during the initial phase of iPad deployment. Dwyer has also served as the district’s web master and continues in that role.
