Uniondale’s global literacy work continued at the Uniondale Public Library, where the district hosted From Uniondale to Ghana: We Have Stories to Tell, a workshop highlighting its writing exchange with Achinakrom Elementary School in Kumasi, Ghana.
The program expands on an initiative first featured by Education Week, which reported how Superintendent Monique Darrisaw-Akil used the children’s book “Tar Beach” to spark a cross-continental storytelling project.
Students in both communities read the book, wrote personal narratives, and shared them through an online platform designed to help children learn about one another’s cultures.
District leaders say the goal is to build global citizenship through literacy rather than charity — an approach that has shaped every phase of the partnership. Plans for the next stage of the exchange are already underway, including opportunities for deeper collaboration between classrooms.
Uniondale teachers and administrators were recognized for helping sustain the work and guiding students through the growing international connection.
