Merrick resident Sophia Kelly spent much of her senior year after school editing stories, assigning coverage and brainstorming ideas with fellow student journalists. This summer, those efforts were recognized when Kellenberg Memorial High School's student newspaper, The Phoenix, earned first place for Best Overall Publication from the New York Press Association.

The Long Island International Film Expo, Long Island’s summer playground for filmmakers, returned to Bellmore Movies and Showplace for its 29th year this month. The festival featured 113 films from around the world, including Spain, Hong Kong, Ghana and beyond, as well as domestic films, including those from Long Islanders.

Sanford H. Calhoun High School junior Joseph Solorzano-Ruiz spent eight months building a towering sculpture that turned heads at the school’s annual art show, “The Xenomorph Warrior,” a nearly 9-foot-tall sculpture inspired by the creature from the “Alien” film franchise.
